haitch if my asset starts selling i may be good for a few too
-
@haitch i can commit to one 8 tb wd internal. :( wish i could do more but the crypto life has me tapped out.

@rds Definitely doable. That's how I plan to expand my servers using: http://www.supermicro.com/products/chassis/4U/847/SC847E26-RJBOD1
You'd need a a SAS card with two external connectors, that'll take care of all drives via internal expanders, and the external chassis can be daisy chained to another
Can you point me to a typical SAS2 card for the pC and the connectors I would need for the 24 drive. box?
Also, I will commit to 24 drives.

Drives will be $177 each, free shipping in the USA. International shipping will be an additional cost,on a case by case basis, and any import/customs fees are the responsibility of the purchaser.
@haitch thanks for asking! unfortunately this is very expensive here - so i'm out.
I really liked the idea and i think the deal is pretty good.
-
@rds For the controller, I've got LSI 24i4e, like this:
but mine was only $300, so you need to be patient to pick one up.
For the connectors, on a typical system you'd need 6 of these:
Or for a backplane that has individual SATA connectors, 6 of these:
With you commitment to 24, that takes us over the 100 drives - will call supplier and see what pricing we can get.
-
@haitch , ok, thanks.
This one is right under it in the ebay listing, will it work, $195??
-
@rds that'll work for an external chassis with a SAS expander backplane. It's SAS2, so not limited to the 2TB max disk size.
-
@haitch , ok great, one more thing, haha, does the card have to be in the PCI x16 or PCI x8 to insure the high speed or is any one of the expansion slots on the mobo ok, even the real short one? I have 4 USB 3.0 controller cards and a GPU currently in the slots now.
-
@rds The SAS cards are generally PCIe 4x - they won't go into the really short slots, but will work in any other slot.

Do you have any clue how much shipping to germany would be? I just rolled some numbers and if the shipping is low enough, I would only have to pay taxes on it and no custom fees... Than it would be still 30% cheaper than in Germany
-
@Shoiji I'll ask.
-
@haitch Talked to the supplier - even with a 100 drive order, $177 is the best their accountants will let when do. I also need to be able to verify shipping addresses to them, so when paypaling me - make sure you include your paypal.com verified address with the payment. We're at 800TB, can we hit a petabyte ?
-
@Shoiji I'll need an address and the number of drives you're after. PM them to me and I'll get a quote from my supplier.
-
@haitch Talked to supplier again - every shipping address needs to be a verified PayPal address - so don't send to me. PM me and I'll give you the address to send to. In the payment message say it's part of Hamish's bulk purchase. But, your paypal account must be a verified address. Unverified addresses will be declined.
-
@haitch thanks i am out i do not use paypal
-
@falconCoin PM me, we can work something out.

I'm out too, as we don't have verified adress in Paypal in Germany. Also it would be much to much work to get it in any other way, only for one or two drives, as more would be under customs regulations... Also if something is wrong with the drives, it would be crazy to get any replacement xD didn't think about this.
-
@Shoiji The drives are warrantied until 2020, but I don't know how EU customs and tariffs would work for them.
-
@haitch Its about 50Euro extra per drive in taxes.
-
@iKnow0 Damn - ouch! Would it be feasible to have the drives shipped to me, then re-shipped to the EU with a lower declared value, or do they physically inspect ?
