Server for plotting and mining 🤔
-
Hi folks!
What do think, is it good choice for plotting and mining on a old server?- Server motherboard - ASUS DSBF-D/SAS (https://www.asus.com/Commercial-Servers-Workstations/DSBFDSAS/)
- 2 x Intel® Xeon® E5440 (https://ark.intel.com/en/products/33082/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5440-12M-Cache-2_83-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB)
- 32gb RAM
- 32TB HDDs (8x4TB Seagate Desktop HDD.15)
How can I calculate a plotting speed?
Maybe someone know pros and cons of server for this purpose?

It only has two PCIE slots and no USB 3.0, so in terms of expandability not great. The SAS controller is PCI-X so slow reading speeds.

My advice keep looking....

@evgen_traytyak for mining doesn't matter much tbh... Regarding plotting my best guess is that you should get between 7500 and 10000 nonces per min with that hardware ;D

@iKnow0 how SATA 2 much slower than USB 3 for HDDs connection?
-
SATA II is 3Gb/s ( so slow plotting and mining)
SATA III is 6 Gb/s
USB 3.0 is 5 Gb/s

@gpedro did you calculate this for CPU plotting (2 x Intel® Xeon® E5440)?
is it about 1.8 - 2.4 gb per minute, yes?
i'm a newcomer in burscoin mining, is it very slow?
-
@iKnow0 thanx for the info :)
-
@evgen_traytyak Yes I calculated using the 2 CPUs into consideration... Please take into account that I did this calc using what my experience tells me but as I never used those CPUs I can not guarantee you this numbers, they can be better or worst. ;D
Yes those numbers are right... xD
What you mean by very slow? I didn't get it! ;D

I have a hp z600 2 x x5550 24gb ram Ok when I use all 16 threads I get around 9k nonces a minute which translate to 1tb xplotter 6hr - 8hr (somewhere in that ballpark) I used the old plotter so cant say for sure.
What I did was put the hdd I was plotting inside the server. Then moved it to my external case. I currently have a mix usb3 and usb2 with 5 hdd enternal and 5 external. I read 15tb in 30 sec using all 16 threads. Good luck and Happy bursting!
