No they are great drives. Its just how the plotter writes the data it takes forever to plot the drives. but once the plotting is done their no different then any other drive
-
@wimel32 I personally run 14 of the 8TB version and love en

@manfromafar oh man thanks for input. i was just about to cry. lol... i havent started mining yet and im making sure my plotting is on point or so i hope. doing 100gb at a time. do you recommend doing that or all at once? And I honestly do know how to mine. i tried to mine with the first drive i plotted and got nothing so i dont know if im even doing it right. i looked at some videos online but they are all old vides.
-
@wimel32 the Seagate SMR drives are a nightmare to plot directly, but mine fine. If possible use xplotter to plot to a same size non-SMR drive, then move the plot to the SMR drives.
-
do not know how to mine i meant

I personally just plotted the entire drive but if your system isn't stable or you frequently lose power its better to do 1TB plots so that if you do crash then you only have to plot 1TB at a time. As far as plotting goes I;ve only used the cpu plotter and I could never get the gpu plotter to work.
PingofD32th has some great yputube videos. His channel is PingOfD32th (Can't link directly or forum eats the link)
As well as getting you started in pool mining Check my sig for the discord channel for our pool. Pings more active in discord then on the forums so better chance of catching him there if you ahve any question about the gpu plotter.
Also we run a pool here http://poolofd32th.club/

Personally I would still get the smr drives because they are cheap. but I know the western digital mybooks are 8TB and also around the same price I like like 30$ more or so.
but depending on your hardware you can get around the drives slow write speeds but putting them in a zfs raid array.
you'll lose some space but gain speed and you can still use the cheap drives

@manfromafar I'm done with SMR drives. I plotted two WD red 8TBs in under a day, the SMR drives took over 2 weeks. Plotting to the reds then copying to the SMR might be faster, but Windows was still telling me 10 days to copy them over. And besides, I loathe Seagates.
-
@manfromafar I was just doing the math and its cheaper to just buy 5 more pcs and have 10 pcs plotting at once.

¯_(ツ)_/¯ I'm fine with the 500MB/s write and 3GB/s reads from the system but to each their own. SMR isn't so bad if you know how to tame the best.
