Forum outage.
-
This afternoon I tried to upgrade the forum software to the latest version, and it didn't go well. Unlike previous updates, as part of this one they're cleaning up "unintended long-lived sessions". The upgrade sat at this point longer than any other upgrade has ever required - I let it run for over 30 minutes the last time I tried the update, and it went no where.
I posted on the nodebb support forums, and they suggested I just had to wait, it will go through. And also a command to display how many of these sessions it was cleaning up - the answer - 5,379,194 sessions. I ran the upgrade on a clone of the forums, and it did finally complete, but took several hours.
I don't want to take the forums down for that long, but have no option if I want to stay on up to date code. So from tomorrow - 05/29/2017 from around 10AM CST, the forums will be down for as long as the upgrade takes - we're looking at possibly several hours.
If people want, while the "real" forums are down I can put up a temporary copy - however any messages posted to the temp copy will disappear when the real version comes back. So what do you all think, just be down for as long as necessary, or have a temp forum where the messages will vanish at the end of the upgrade?
-
i only voted temporary so that any newbies wont come here not Know its down and end up elsewhere
-
other option - temp forum saying the forums are down for maintenance. I can't update the poll to include that option, so if that's your preference, just say so here.
-
@haitch the message saying under maintenance should be there for sure...

@gpedro said in Forum outage.:

Agree.
-
you dont want to feed the empire... you say maintenance and your incompetent will be what is said... but whatever is less work go with that if need be
-
@falconCoin They will proclaim my incompetence and how pathetic my servers are no matter what I do, and personally - I don't give a flying f**k what they have to say. They're the ones stealing from and screwing with the community. The people that matter are here and contributing. The megalomaniac and his petty thief accomplice are not relevant.
-
temporary with a message indicating maintenance
-
I voted perm so u can get it done as fast as possible. Not dealing with upping a temp.
-
@Hitti2 Bringing up the temp server takes almost no time at all - but I'm leaning towards a temp pool with a maintenance mode message.
-
@haitch temp with maintenance mesaage :)
-
@haitch Temp message with links to other resources.
-
Make the copy read only/ under maintenance.
Fasten your seatbelts.
-
@daWallet Good idea, could also put up a Discord invite for any one that wants a chat / questions and progress etc?

I don't know anything about nodebb and its database structure, but since its only session data you should be able to manually delete those entries (maybe 100k at a time?) before running the update script. Worst things that could happen to users is that they are being logged out. I guess the guys at the nodebb forum will know how to do this and if its possible without any side effects
-
A temporary forum for reading only with a under maintenance message seems good to me
-
Well according to one of the nodebb "Global Moderators" it should be possible to run the upgrade, with the forums running, so I'm going to try that. Worse case - there will be a sudden shutdown.
-
Go for whatever means less work for you as youd got more important work to do no matter what, if it means Forum downtime for ~8 hours then so be it.
There is periods of time where there are about 4-5 new post within this timeframe on this Forum - you also have to rec. that there are users from different timezones, so while Forum downtime they might be asleep as well and even wont recognize any downtime after all lol.
Coin has seen worse things than a phorum shutdown for a couple of hours lately, but thats just my opinion lol.
-
@haitch Online upgrade does not appear to be working properly - the number of sessions is increasing not decreasing, so going to put the forums into maintenance mode in 15 minutes, then shut them down until the upgrade completes.
-
@haitch Upgrade completed without issue. Apologies for the downtime, but the cleanup of all the phantom sessions should make the site more responsive, and will enable us to upgrade to the current software versions as they become available.
