Best CPU and GPU for mining/plotting

@ShakeAndBake-xD Looks at cores * clock: Intel 4 Cores but 8 threads* 4.2GHz = 33.6. Amd: 8 Threads @ 3.9 = 31.2. Less than a 10% difference - Decide based on price, convenience.As for a GPU, I've had a much better experience with AMD over nVidia.
-
-
@haitch The amd one has 16 threads and 8 cores. Would that be a very noticeable difference like 50% faster scanning of my externals. Also the intel 4 core is $150 dollars cheaper
-
Amd all the way imho,my system has an 8350k 8core and 16gb ram and plots a 5tb external in less than 24hrs I don't use my gpu's as there mining something else but again there both Radeon rx cards, price wise they beat intel and NVidia hands down I think.
-
@batonkill What do you think the nonces per minute would be on a ryzen 7 1800x
-
@ShakeAndBake-xD my 8 core cpu writes at around 6400 nonce's a minute at 4.0ghz so i would hope that the new 8 core would be considerably faster, the 1800x is a $500 cpu though,ive no experience with ryzen yet.
-
My post above I assumed the 8 core machine had 16 threads, thus more cores was better. Most CPUs pump out 800-1200 nonces/min/thread.
-
@rds yup, mores law.
-
@ShakeAndBake-xD Do not get the 1800x because it's a waste of money for just a slightly faster chip. Get the 1700 and overclock it if you feel you need to. All of the Ryzen 7 chips use the same architecture, so they all overclock to about the same speeds anyway. They also benefit from having faster memory, so keep that in mind if you pick one up.
I use a GTX 1070 for plotting, but I hear the AMD cards are easier/better in that regard. For mining 100+ TB, I use a GTX 950 and it scans my drives in about 30 seconds. If I use something less powerful, like a GT 730, then it takes about 45 seconds.

There's also this to consider: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/05/amd-ryzen-threadripper-price-specs-release-date/
-
@sevencardz the 1700 has 4 cores and 8 threads and the 1800x has 8 cores and 16 threads wouldn't it be almost twice as much performance because you have twice as many cores and threads?
-
@ShakeAndBake-xD , Yes
-
@ShakeAndBake-xD No no, the Ryzen 7 1700 is an 8 core chip with 16 threads. It is the same core architecture as the 1700X and the 1800X but it costs less because it's rated at a lower clockspeed. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113428
-
Sounds like 16 threads would make for some really fast plotting. My rough math tells me running 14 threads to plot would net you 22 to 26K nonces -which is about the speed a GTX 1070 would give you unoptimized. So about 1TB every 2.5 hours I would guess.
-
@sevencardz If Jminer scans your hard drives so much quicker why do the majority of people still stick to Blagos? Do they use their GPU strictly for plotting and CPU for scanning? Like if I look in the pools majority is Blago
-
@sevencardz Yeah I see what your saying with the 1700 it's a way better deal when you could just overclock it to 4ghz. My bad I thought it was only 4 cores

I do just the opposite, Jminer and Xplotter.

Depends on what "most cpu's are". My 3770k overclocked@4.5GHz does 10-12knonces/min But thats with 7 threads enabled in the plotting option. I can go 8 but I would not be able to do anything on the pc ans it would lag.
If OP has the money to blow, get the Ryzen 1800X, board and memory and overclock that 1800x to the max, I bet you get 44k n/m or less
ryzen 1700 AMD Ryzen 7 1700 @3Ghz 16gb Ram Win10
18000-19000 nonces/min

https://www.burstnation.com/wbb/index.php?thread/948-post-your-plotting-speeds-here-plotting-hardware-comparison/&postID=36044#post36044I run 3 instances of the plotter at the same time with full cores enabled. No lag if you set the priority.

Also for the OP.
Good info.
