CPU/GPU mining, big difference?
-
@newsense2004 Actually, the CPU can become a bottleneck. The CPU miner can mine one drive/directory per thread - but what if you have more drives than threads? GPU can be faster than CPU, but you need to test it on your specific setup to determine which is better.
-
CPU is a bottleneck for me, would use GPU but im playing games while mining so :P
-
@HiDevin IIRC you have like 10 or more external drives don't you? Is that CPU bottleneck only due to all the plots you have?
-
@newsense2004 Idk, when im mining with the GPU im seeing a 20 second difference than my CPU miner because old CPU fx 6300 6 processor ( takes 1 min 10 sec to find DL ) 8tb .-.
edit; only one external drive. 8tb
-
@HiDevin I have an intel i7-4770K so I think for now that should due until I start getting into as many plots as you.
-
@newsense2004 I just measured the last round on one of my systems that runs both Blago and jMiner simultaneously in case one hangs up.
System: 2 * Opteron 4180 (12 Cores total) R7 370 GPU, 11 Drives, 38,796 GB
CPU Mining - 50 Secs.
GPU Mining - 22 Secs.
-
@haitch Ok well that answers my question. thank you for posting those results. Now to get JMiner to work, doesn't work for me for some reason.
-
@newsense2004 make sure you have 64 bit java and the PlatformID and DeviceID match your GPU.
-
@haitch Thanks, no idea why I had a 32bit version of Java installed. I'm sure that's the problem. Thanks.
-
@haitch why does it ask if u want to use ur second openGL device to mine, would it be for gamers?
edit: because i can use one gpu for gaming one gpu for mining. :P
-
My response was based on my setup. 25 drives on one USB 3.0 input on a $350 laptop with an integrated GPU. 5% difference in CPU vs GPU time. Your mileage may vary.
-
@HiDevin Where do see that message? I don't get it on my system.
-
@haitch That's what I get in the AIO wallet too when choosing opencl
-
@newsense2004 ok, I don't use the AIO - these are dedicated miners, and have been mining since before the AIO existed.
-
@haitch is this the PlatformID and DeviceID, PCI bus 1, device 0 ?
-
@haitch I plan on switching to dedicated miners soon but for now wanted to see if I could get better results with the AIO and GPU.
-
@newsense2004 Platform/DeviceID can vary by system. Get the GPUPlotGenerator, run it with "gpuplotgenerator setup", then get it to list the devices.
-
@haitch Thanks, will do. Needed it anyways to plot a new drive.
-
@newsense2004 I've got a couple of miners that were plotted with GPU, but the restartability and reliability of xplotter makes it my preferred plotter if your system supports it.
-
Anyone know if the GPUPlotGenerator optimizes also?
