What do you guys think about this drive?
-
@newsense2004 They're not SMR, grab 'em
-
@haitch Thanks, good to hear!
-
For an 8TB drive I go with this one and its about $10 cheaper
-
@KyleH112 Thanks, good find!
-
@newsense2004 I work for amazon so I know where the deals are plus my 10% off employee discount lol
To find cheaper items check out "Warehouse Deals" usually only the package has minor damage but the item is fine.
-
@KyleH112 good info! ive had amazon prime for 6 years never even knew there were warehouse deals :)
-
Yeah, everytime I find an item with a big hole in the box I have to damage the item out and it turns into a warehouse deal (after the actual item is inspected and re-boxed)
-
@KyleH112 amazon hooked me up recently after they messed up a delivery .. so.. not everyone there is a robot or drone?
-
@darindarin Only a few warehouses have robots and all the robot does is brings the ordered item to a human and the human packs and ships it. The robot basically looks like the robot vacuums but with a shelf on top of it, robot can hold up to if I remember right 500 pounds. There are videos on youtube about it and about the warehouses.
Amazon is very customer based, any problems they TRY to fix it to ensure he/she will keep ordering.

personally. i wouldnt go with these drives the readspeeds are fairly slow.
id spend the extra $$ and buy these https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-External-Desktop-Storage-STEL8000100/dp/B01HD6ZLQ6/ref=pd_sim_147_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=MMDPPN161GY18STE24XM
these are the ones i am buying for my asset lex4all. they hit about 200mb/s reads and are extremely reliable..
they contain 8tb seagate archive drives. which are SMR Drives and these ones are perfect for burst. as they were built for the purpose of very small writes and a shit ton of reads.
they do get warm though so if your stacking them you might need a fan

if hes buying this for his asset. it wouldnt be the best idea to go with warehouse deals for HDD's. alll you need is one thrown around a bit and in a few months it will just stop working. which wouldnt be good for the investors. which means spend the extra money rather than trying to strike a deal only to get burned and to burn the asset holders later
-
@Lexicon I have one of those drives as well, was actually the very first external I bought.
-
@newsense2004 Go for it, I prefer anything over Seagate on the long term. Many Seagates failed me while WD, Toshiba and HGST still working. Try to get the DUO as it have WD RED series for not much more $.
-
@KyleH112 Looks like you have the one @Lexicon suggested and this one https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Desktop-External-STEB5000100/dp/B00TKFEEBW/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1490711592&sr=1-5&keywords=seagate+external+hard+drive Which do you like better?

Where did you find the drive speeds for these drives? Thanks for being cool BTW and tell Adam I thought his song about me was hilarious. Can't wait until my girlfriend gets home so I can play it for her.
-
@newsense2004 they are pretty much the same from my experience with them , just the more expensive one has 2 USB drives in it
-
@KyleH112 Thanks, appreciate it. Was having a hard time deciding between the two. Are the speeds the same? @Lexicon said the ones with the USB are faster.
-
@newsense2004 They are both USB 3.0 so speeds will be the same, unless the hard drive inside has a faster read/write speed
-
@KyleH112 I think that's what he was saying. I'll have to find the speeds, weren't listed on Amazon.
-
@haitch Are SMR drives not the best option for mining?
-
@newsense2004 They're a PITA for plotting - an 8TB drive will take about a week to directly plot optimized. Once plotted though, no issue.
