HD turning off before plotting is complete, what's happening here?
-
@tross Yeah, I was thinking this as well so I did some research and found out I can switch off power management from each usb port. Everything I believe is unthrottled so I'm perplexed.
-
@Vanquish External Drive? What brand? I have a RAID enclosure that turns off when it is in JBOD. As a RAID-0 it runs 24/7.
Also watch the data speeds as it copies. I have seen drives that copy and go slower and slower over time. This is a driver issue with the USB3. Go buy a USB3 PCI-e card and test it that way possibly? $20 could take care of the problem or at least send you in the right direction.
You should be able to use PlotChecker and save the plots that are there too.
-
@CryptoNick It's a Seagate 8tb external. This is my eight one of this type and never experienced this issue. The rest plotted fine and are mining for me.
I will look into the PCi card and attempt to run plot checker again. I tried once with no success. I am replotting this drive now it has stayed on throughout the night. Hopefully over time it stays on and doesn't slow down. Time will tell I guess.
-
@Vanquish PCI-E, not PCI
I have both, pci - very slow
-
@Blago Thanks man :)
-
what id do is take the external drive apart to get the drive inside ,
unplug the third party connector on the drive itself and plug it into a pc using sata
im pretty sure its faster than usb , and it wont shut off, it will also void your warranty
-
@Luke1219 yeah, I thought about just taking apart all of my drives and docking then into an Orico holder. Then I won't have to deal with a lot of hassle. Right now they are all in their cases stacked in a row working.
Also, I'm using a laptop for this. So do you Sata to USB would suffice?
-
@Vanquish
if the laptop has USB3.0 you should get one of these

it what adam uses for his hard drives i think
-
@Luke1219 Yeah, this looks like a nice option. There is an Orico dealer in a mall near me. I think I'm sold on this idea. I wish there was a 5 or 6 slot holder.
-
Happy i could help
im thinking of doing this myself, im running out of drive bays in my pc
-
Any idea how to fix an error reading file while mining prompt? My 1.3tb Seegate external hdd gives me this error randomly after a few deadlines, I've tried all of the above power settings
Edit. Hdd is USB 2.0 1.3tb from Seegate, I can't seem to remove the casing looks like one piece
-
there will be a seam somwhere, some hidden screws under labels
they had to put it together somehow :)
-
@Luke1219 agreed looks seamless everywhere but the docking bay
Edit just ran a disc check and I have a few bad sectors, would that affect me?
-
quite possibly, i wouldst know for sure though
-
@Luke1219 Funny, because just 2 days ago I bought a 10 hub USB holder for all the drives. Now, if I get the Orico 4 slot hdd holder my purchase of the the 10 port usb hub won't be viable until I get into the 500 tb range lol.
-
the more ports on you usb hub
the better the deadlines ;)
-
I just switched over to a new computer and had the drive shut off. It scrolls a READ ERROR across the miner screen. I took the drive that shut off and used a USB2 cable instead. All drives are still reading now. Not shutting off. This is a USB3 problem for sure. Too many devices or something to that effect.
-
@CryptoNick USB3 has external power?
I have Seagate Expansion 4 TB with external power and 2.5" drive without external power . both works fine.
-
@Luke1219 There are YouTube videos of people taking them apart as well. So easy to do.
-
@Blago Yes sir! All have external power that is why it is so perplexing. It is a new system though as I consolidated since I am not plotting no need for massive power now from my CPU's. The drives work fine on my 6 Core Systems but one of my RAID in JBOD has a problem. In RAID-0 all is fine 24/7. But on the new system I got it working with JBOD on USB2 and 100 seconds to scan lol. I hit some blocks so yahoo!
My next adventure will be Mini-SAS I don't want to fool around with USB3 anymore.
