You need an ethernet connection to plot this one.
Keep in mind that majority of NAS will be slower than any USB drives to plot/mining

ben is correct, ethernet only. so without an ethernet hub (or router) a cross over cable could be used. the laptop would have to run a dhcp server (i think it can be done with windows connection sharing) at least to get access to set a static ip.

the result would be slower than an external drive, difference of gigabit ethernet vs usb 3 speeds.
