CPU for HDD mining
-
I'm setting up a GPU rig and will HDD mine at the same time. I have a socket 1150 MB and thinking of putting an i7-4790K processor. Its a bit more than i would like to pay ($486 cdn) because for Cryto coin you don't need this powered CPU.
Is this a high end CPU for HDD mining? is there a better recommendation (lower price) for the socket type i have?
Please advise.
thanks

@kendrew Well depends on how much hdd's you are mining and how many TB each drive is. Personally this cpu is Overkill but will be good for resale value. Notice the "K" at the end of the model 4790K this indicates that it can be overclocked, this type of cpu for Burstcoin mining is like taking Ferrari to go-kart track, also "K" variants doesn't come with a cooler so more money will have to be spent on that as well. ~$50
Note that Overclockable cpu's consume more electricity and require special know how in the bios (Voltage, etc ), and if done incorrectly
voids your warranty and permanently destroys the cpu (NO Redo's or Restarts). Also the cpu during burstcoin mining is at idle 95% of the time making a supercharge cpu not practical. A better option would be spending money on more cores instead of a "K" variant but since your looking for a cheaper option I'll leave these recommendations out of the list. Here are my recommendations for you in descending price order:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116987&cm_re=lga_1150 (The Non-K variant of your choice) $399 CAD
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116989&cm_re=lga_1150 (The Best Cpu without over spending) $289CAD
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA9H53VC2118&cm_re=lga_1150 (The Budget Conscious way to go) $230 CAD
All of these options are a good substitute for gpu's which you may want to consider if they are going to be in your rig., although some cpu's are better than others and for different reasons. The best option in resell value and also not compromising in ploting speed too much is the mid range model for $289 CAD.
PS. That processor you posted uses a "LGA 1150" socket I haven't heard of a "1150 MB" before, so just note that the recommendations are based off the same socket the processor your considering to buy uses.
All the Best

@kendrew So ya it's a LGA 1150 also seen here: https://www.amazon.ca/ASRock-Motherboard-H81-PRO-BTC/dp/B00HEUIS2G%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAILSHYYTFIVPWUY6Q%26tag%3Dduckduckgo-d-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB00HEUIS2G
I haven't seen one of these since I stopped gpu Bitcoin mining

I just bought this board (ECS $30) and also was looking at the i7-4790K . I started to use the website www.cpu-worlds.com where I look at cores/threads/ avx2
i3-4370 = 2/4/yes $150
i5-4590 = 4/4/yes Better priced $155i7-4770 = 4/8/yes best bet $239 used
i7-4790 = 4/8/yes
